Usage of Thermal Imaging camera Engine or Core

May 18, 2023 by Uttam Pegu 1 Comment

Thermal imaging camera cores, also known as thermal camera modules or thermal camera engines, are key components used in the construction of thermal imaging cameras. These camera cores are integrated into various applications where thermal imaging is required. Here are some common usage scenarios:

Security and surveillance: Thermal imaging camera cores are extensively used in security systems for monitoring and surveillance purposes. They can detect human and animal presence by capturing their heat signatures, even in low light or obscured conditions. This makes them valuable for perimeter security, intrusion detection, and surveillance in areas such as airports, borders, and industrial facilities.

Gas Leakage detection using a Thermal Camera

April 28, 2023 by Uttam Pegu Leave a Comment

We use various gases for both domestic as well as industrial purposes. Domesting Cooking gas is widely used and well known to many. many people can identify domestic cooking gas leakage by its odour. Sometimes its possible to detect leakage by its sound when the leakage makes noise. Apart from these domestic gases, there are many odourless gases which are invisible to human eyes, and leakage happens in small quantities without making any noise. These make it impossible to detect such leakages.

Traditionally, gas leakage has been detected by immersing the gas container in water and looking for air bubbles. While, it could be suitable for ‘small’ containers or moveable containers, but not suitable for large containers as well as ‘installed’ containers.

Also, it may not be possible for human to use vision, hearing or smelling to detect gas leakages as it could be hazardous.

Handheld Thermal Camera or Online Thermal Camera

January 11, 2022 by Uttam Pegu Leave a Comment

Definition of Handheld Thermal Cameras are those which are battery operated, can be carried in hand and used for measuring temeprature on demand. Few examples are HandHeld Thermal Cameras are those used for periodic inspection of electical equipments, or any other equipments which require periodic temperature measurment.
“Online Thermal Cameras” are normally installed at a fixed location independently or in a PT ( pana nd Tilt) enclosure to monitor an area continuously. Few exampels are Online Thermal Cameras are Kiln Monitoring Camera, Flare Stack Monitoring Camera etc.

As Thermal Camera is not widely known and discussed or used like mobile phones, many first time users may not be able to decide what kind of thermal camera one should use to real world problems. Any periodic measurment which requires to be automated with higher accuracy, should use online thermal camera instead of handheld thermal camera. HandHeld thermal camera is always operated by a human as the name suggests.

Thermal Camera Eco-system

December 9, 2021 by Uttam Pegu Leave a Comment

Due to COVID19, “Thermal Camera or thermal screening system” have become household name which was otherwise confined to industrial and military domain. While trying to develop ( or trying to find a practical, off-the-shelf deployable), it was found that, the Thermal Imaging software which are available with thermal camera manufacturers, are quite inadequate. And there were not many System Integrators or third party thermal application developers who have many practical applications for solving real world problems!

There are few Thermal Imaging Application developers like Viper Imaging, which uses FLIR Thermal cameras for providing various industrial solutions. I think, there is a requirment for more such system integrators without which a eco-system around thermal cameras will not grow and there will always be shortage to provide last mile solutions to industries.

Flare Stack Monitoring using Thermal Camera

November 9, 2021 by Uttam Pegu 1 Comment

O&G ( Oil and Gas) companies release hydro-carbon or unwanted gases, could be byproduct of some processes too into the atmosphere. But regulations require these gases to be burnt before it reaches the atmosphere to prevent it from polluting the atmosphere as well as prevent accidental explosion of unburnt hydro-carbon.

Flare Stack Monitoring System
Flare Stack Monitoring System

Any O&G companies would install at least one Flare where they would have pilot flame which will ignite any unburnt/unwanted/byproduct gases before it is released into the atmosphere. It is very important to monitor the pilot flame as well as any gases are burnt properly before it reaches air.

Teledyne Flir And Thermal Camera in coming days

September 4, 2021 by Uttam Pegu 1 Comment

Teledyne Acquiring Flir (World Leader in Thermal Camera world) is an old news, but most probably, its a significant milestone in Thermal Camera industry. While low cost Chinese made thermal cameras have becoming popular, but after COVID19, many countries have stressing to buy thermal camera products made in Western countries.

COVID19 has also created a niche market where combining thermal camera and visual camera made an useful solution. While ther have been other application where both thermal and visual cameras were used, like in surveillance, this was the first time image processing and thermal camera have been combined to make a solution. Teledyne, visual camera and image processing company with intersts in many industries, acquiring the largest thermal camera company seems to be a natural progression for both Teledyne and Flir. Together, they could most probably, make very robust and useful solutions by combining thermal imagery and image processing software to solve many real world problems.

Surveliance and military applications of thermal camera may see huge technical improvements in coming days. We should hope for some solution which will combine various technologies like RADAR, Thermal camera, Machine Learning and wireless communication. These solutions could be useful in industrial as well as security & syrveillance as well as military applications.
